Raku Ceramics: the power of tradition!
Over the Christmas period, Fornace Cotto Antico is giving away a free set of
Raku Ceramic bowls with every indoor or outdoor terracotta floor purchased.
~ Tradition ~
Raku is a perfect fit for Fornace Cotto Antico: artisanal, traditional and beautiful. This year we are embracing the promotion and production of these breath-taking ceramics. Just like terracotta, Raku is steeped in history. It originated in Japan in the 16th Century, and many aspects are closely related to the philosophy that forms the base of our work: elegant simplicity and a celebration of the natural form, to name but two
~ Technique ~
As with terracotta, Raku is kiln fired, but whilst it is still incandescent it is removed from the kiln and undergoes a considerable thermal shock that results in its unique look. Chamotte, the clay used in this process, is sturdy and shiny, properties derived from grains of sand baked into the clay which help protect the ceramic from fracturing during the process.
Once modelled, the white clay is fired to between 950°C and 1000°C before being decorated.
Traditional and Contemporary
Our terracotta flooring is made by following the same techniques that have been used for thousands of years.
~ Terracotta ~
Our classic red terracotta is made using Tuscan clay. Its high iron content gives it its characteristic warm hue. Clay from Lazio gives our yellow range its distinctive colour.
~ Special Pieces ~
We have a wide range of products to meet every need: from flooring in red, pink and yellow terracotta tiles, to swimming pool surrounds and roofing tiles. Whatever you need, we can create it.
~ Accessories ~
Born from the link between earth and fire, terracotta is one of the oldest artforms. It is this long history which inspires our range of accessories: table lamps, free-standing lamps, and wall lights.
